The summer school Cyber Physical Systems (CPS) was held from June 30th till July 11th in Trento, Italy hosted by Fondazione Bruno Kessler.

The school focused on ways of applying the currently available S&P techniques in design, analysis and deployment of CPS in everyday life and business activities. The goal was to provide multi-disciplinary knowledge and skills on CPS. Targeted participants were Master and PhD students, researchers and engineers of the relevant disciplines.

The school was organised in two main sessions. The first week introduced challenges on the following themes: embedded systems, (networked) control systems, wireless sensor networks, and computer science. Frontal lectures were followed by specific tutorials and group work in order to let the students connect theory with practice. The students interacted with one another, and started focusing on team work for drafting a project proposal on the introduced thematic challenges.

The second week focused on acquiring the skills for preparing a business plan and the corresponding pitch presentations on one or combination of the introduced challenges. This session of the school was accompanied with interactive teaching and tutoring on both business and technical aspects. Each student group worked on a business case and developed a project proposal on an ICT application (product or service) for one of the particular challenges presented in the first week. Through team work, students also performed market studies, analyzed competitors, and explored social and usability aspects of the proposed application. Finally, each student group jointly presented its project to an evaluation panel.

"In Cyber-Physical Systems, objects and processes of the physical world are integrated with the virtual world of global digital networks, such as the Internet, leading to an Internet of things, data and services."
(Holger Pfeifer, Action Line Leader Cyber-Physical Systems)
