More than ever companies need to be prepared to defend against and respond to data breaches, cybersecurity insiders tell Bloomberg BNA. Meanwhile, debates over consumer encryption of personal devices also have implications for companies, they say.

Data breaches dominated headlines in 2015, including hacking attacks at Premera Blue Cross and Anthem; the Office of Personnel Management; and Ashley Madison. President Barack Obama has proposed a $19 billion Cybersecurity National Action Plan, seeking to enhance the U.S.’s cybersecurity cooperation between the public and private sectors. The standoff between Apple Inc. and the Federal Bureau of Investigation over access to a terrorist’s iPhone hurled encryption to the forefront of the debate over balancing privacy and security.

In interviews with Bloomberg BNA, Symantec Corp. Vice President of Government Affairs and Cyber Policy Cheri F. McGuire and University of California Berkeley Center for Law & Technology Executive Director James Dempsey shared their insights into these pertinent issues.
